Ottoman Period Uşhak Carpet

Western Turkey-19th Century

370 × 505 cm

A major rug producing area since Ottoman times, Uşak was a primary source of carpets made for the Ottoman Court since at least the 16th century. Carpets known to us now as “Lotto”, “Selendi”, “Star”, “Cintamani” or “Medallion” Uşaks have special importance in the Classical Oriental Carpet Lexicon.

The present carpet is typical in weave and construction from the second half of the 19th century. Woolen knots on both warp and weft of wool. With soft pastel colors and a spacious mix of floral palmetts and acanthus leaves connected by meandering vines, the design beautifully composed and executed - an extremely prized example for the current contemporary decorative market.
