Walnut Marquetry “Cofre de Costurera”

México - 19th Century
Signed Mariano Fernández
4 del Relox 9

The present seamstress’s coffer is a rare and exceptional example of the work of the master “ebanista” Mariano Fernández of the city of México. Masterfully inlaid with mother-of-pearl, abalone and wood trace geometric patterns and elegant floral motifs. The accompanying medallion riveted to the frontal platform of the opened closure displays a silver monogrammed plate that illustrate four medallions signifying gold, silver, and bronze prizes with the respective years awarded. Although further research is necessary it appears that the prizes were awarded at the Paris Fair in the corresponding years.

This piece was sourced in the trade in Marselle, France in 2002.

Mariano Fernández, Guitarra Séptima (Seven-course guitar)

The Mexican seven-course guitar reached the height of its popularity during the 19th century. It was used to perform music in a variety of genres, most of it written by Mexican composers. This beautifully crafted instrument by Mariano Fernández epitomizes guitar making in Mexico at its highest level. Inlaid mother-of-pearl, abalone and wood trace intricate geometric patterns and elegant floral motifs on every surface. Just below the bridge, a lyre topped by a Phrygian cap, symbols of music and liberty, connect the guitar to Mexico’s Liberal Reform movement and its cultural expression in art and music.
